A snapshot of what’s going on in the world’s economy.  Financial Ructions and book reviews can be a bit more technical so feel free to skip them.  See disclaimer at the end of this note.

Summary

  • Despite aggregate economic data such as retail spending and GDP showing Americans are increasing their spending, many companies are seeing the opposite.
  • Economic weakness in Japan and China.
  • Some more price over volume.
  • For some reason, cognac sales are falling considerably in the US.
    • Some point to a normalisation in cognac consumption after a surge post-Covid.
  • More mainstream policymakers seem to be finding the religion of fiscal and monetary conservatism.
    • Better late than never but of course it means more pain for more people.
